Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an effective, brief intervention for inpatients with psychosis. ACT an adaptation of mindfulness training, has been effectively used to treat acute symptoms of schizophrenia (Bach & Hayes, 2002).
Patients undergoing ACT showed increased symptom occurrence awareness and reduced believability of delusional/hallucinatory symptoms. Rehospitalization rates in ACT participants were half those of treatment-as-usual (TAU) control groups.
ACT enables patients to re-orient cognitions, helping them recognize symptoms as non-reality and better cope with them, even with severe thought disorders.
Discussion in the greater context of utilizing mindfulness interventions to become better healthcare leaders.
